Synopsis:

Scarlett Roth loves nothing more than to immerse herself in a good book. So, the tale of a modern-day witch hunt and a sinister adversary threatening to irrevocably alter a young girl’s life forever should be the perfect story in which to lose herself. Unfortunately for her; she’s the girl, the threat is real and she will unearth one of the modern world’s greatest secrets – the witch trials are not over, they have evolved.

Scarlett’s life is thrown upside down when she starts having terrifying visions. Her only comfort in a strange new town comes in the form of enticing and popular Jake; but the more she learns about her ‘power’, the more she realizes her interest in him is drawing unwanted attention of the darkest kind.

Sweet Reads Review:

I have to say, I was kinda worried going into this book, as it is YA, and about the Salem Witch Trials…not really my cup of tea, BUT the synopsis intrigued me so I thought, “What the heck.”  The story starts as Scarlett, our heroine, recently moves with her mother across the US to Massachusetts from Washington State. Her mother has been put in charge of organizing tons of new documents newly discovered regarding the Salem Witch Trials.

With the move, comes a new school. Scarlett’s first day at school begins a domino effect of strange events. She experiences these weird visions that start to come true.  …this can’t be good! As with any high school setting, you have the popular girls, the nerds, the jocks, the bookworms and the weird kids.  She’s not sure how or who she is going to fit in with.  Enter two quirky ladies, Lydia and Taylor. They take her in and give her the rundown of the land...but as she is taking it all in, her eyes land on the ever so gorgeous, Jake Mayer. There is an instant attraction to him and he even seems to notice her….and he NEVER notices the girls. The friendship that blossoms between these two is very sweet. As they become closer friends, Jake notices when Scarlett has these “visions” and truly starts to worry about her.  What is going on with her, why are they happening?
She soon finds herself trying to figure it all out, never bothering her mother with this small little detail of her life, but immersing herself in books trying to figure out her “condition”.  Soon she is on a path that takes her straight into the world of the Salem Witch Trials, something that happened over 300 years ago. Could there really be a connection?

The drama that is left to unfold is exciting and dangerously scary all at the same time! I will admit I was turning the pages faster and faster as I went through the book. Ms. Keen did a great job portraying her character as smart kids, not the “deer-in-the-headlights type. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and am actually looking forward to book two, Ashes!

  2. Camera Five is an awesome paranormal book by Martyn Stratton, but I would say that Amy's books are paranormal too so those have to be my favourite, i can't wait for Pheonix to be released!
